Marshall Holman Was Right About Bowling

Marshall Holman’s $2,500 foul-light meltdown brought a PBA suspension. Years later, the tour encouraged the kind of antics it had punished.

In 1980, Holman kicked a foul light out of place at the Showboat Doubles Classic in Las Vegas. The PBA fined him and suspended him for ten weeks. The incident became part of his bad-boy reputation, but the suspension also interrupted the career of a player who kept earning his way onto television.

Holman’s case reached beyond one outburst. In 1987, he won Player of the Year without winning a tournament, and the eligibility rules later changed. His career put two uncomfortable questions in front of the PBA: how should it measure its best player, and how much personality could its television product tolerate?

After the PBA changed owners in 2000, its approach to personality changed too. Pete Weber’s flamboyance became something the new management encouraged. Following Holman from the foul light to the award ballot and the broadcast booth reveals the gap between the behavior the old tour disciplined and the entertainment the new tour wanted to sell.
