Floretta McCutcheon beat Jimmy Smith. Her free bowling lessons opened the sport to women and helped turn beginners into paying league customers.
In December 1927, a Pueblo housewife beat one of bowling’s biggest names in a Denver exhibition. The Rocky Mountain News reported a more complicated weekend: McCutcheon lost on Saturday, won on Sunday, and Smith led on total pins across both nights. The victory was real. So was the Saturday result that disappeared from the familiar retelling.
Within months, Brunswick-Balke-Collender and the Bowlers Journal were helping arrange her national tour. McCutcheon had the skill to keep the crowds coming, but the business grew beyond exhibition matches. Newspapers and bowling proprietors sponsored free schools, bringing women onto lanes that needed daytime customers.
The newspaper coupon connects those lessons to the larger story. In Denver, women needed a coupon for each lesson, and the school enrollment list became the basis for two afternoon leagues. McCutcheon gave beginners a way into the game; the businesses around her gained readers, bowlers and repeat customers. Her win over Jimmy Smith became an introduction to a much bigger bowling business.
