The Professional Bowlers Association runs a private tollbooth between every ball brand and the TV broadcast, and the fee to cross it has never been published anywhere. A ball that is not on the PBA’s registered products list cannot be thrown in competition, and a logo that is not on it cannot appear on a telecast. Miss the payment, and the brand is legally invisible on tour.
This is a forensic breakdown of who built that tollbooth and what it costs a brand to skip it. In 2012, MOTIV marketing vice president Scott Hewitt spelled out the funnel: grassroots bowlers buy what they see win on TV, so the broadcast is the real commercial and registration decides who is allowed to run one.
For years no one could point to a brand the fee had actually erased. Then SWAG Bowling did it to itself. After the retailer BowlersMart acquired SWAG from California Bowling, the new owner did not pay, and for the entire 2025 PBA season no SWAG ball could be thrown and no SWAG logo could appear on a telecast.
