The Ugly Truth About Bowling’s Handicap System

USBC’s Handicap Facts page says better teams took 70 of every 100 league titles at full handicap. The evidence came from inside the system.

For generations, league bowling offered something the PBA never promised: a way for the ordinary bowler to compete with the best player in the house. The handicap made the arithmetic look reassuring. Then USBC published the results of a four-year study covering men’s, women’s and mixed leagues. Even at 100% handicap, the higher-average teams still collected seven championships in ten. The page carrying that finding was the governing body’s own explanation of how the system was supposed to work.

The next number is the one that makes the case. Handicap Facts gives 116% as the setting associated with an even championship split in the study. Returning the full difference between averages and dividing championships evenly turned out to be two different promises.
