The Professional Bowlers Association built a televised empire on lanes it didn’t own — Brunswick’s and AMF’s. And while the PBA put champions on ABC, the two companies that owned the floor were quietly deleting the one skill that held the whole sport together: keeping score by hand. In 1967, Brunswick finished a roughly decade-long project and sold the machine that did it.
The Automatic Scorer was built by Robert Reynolds, a West Coast electronics expert who knew calculators, not bowling. Brunswick field-tested it at Village Lanes in Chicago; the American Bowling Congress approved it for sanctioned play in August 1967, and on October 10, 1967 it kept the book in a league for the first time — at about three thousand dollars a lane. The brief was simple: take the math out of bowling, so a casual walk-in never had to learn it. Before that machine, league membership required learning to keep score — and that arithmetic was the apprenticeship that turned a person who happened to bowl into a person who belonged to a league.
This is the forensic story of a pattern, not a conspiracy. No document says Brunswick set out to destroy league bowling — and the machine didn’t kill the leagues by itself (deindustrialization and the suburbs did most of that). What the record shows is narrower and, in a way, worse: a company that removed the competences that made league bowling sticky — first hand scorekeeping (1967), then the gutter’s lesson with Phil Kinzer’s bumper bowling (1982), then leaned all the way into the casual crowd with Cosmic Bowling (1995, launched, in the trade coverage, “faced with a forty percent decline in league bowling”) — and treated the eroding league base as a market to serve, not a wound to close. The same playbook is running now with the string pin. From roughly 9.8 million league bowlers around 1980 to about one million by 2022-23 — a near-90% collapse. The USBC still teaches you how to keep score by hand. It says it matters. The machine decided nobody would ever have to learn it again.
